Na Hye Ryung Invited Exhibition

The title of the exhibition, Spread, means develop, establish, unfold, and report. The event begins with trauma based on the artist’s personal experiences. Trauma, originated from the Greek traumat, involvesboth external and internal disorder. Psychologically, it refers to “mental wound” that leaves permanent psychological disorder. In particular, the artist reveals internal mental state and interaction through self-confessing actions about posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At the exhibit, the artist presents “Untitled (2020)”, an extension to the installation work “Sweet Liar” in 2013. To express her mental pain eroded by trauma, the artist made the work exhibit using iridescent papers. The audience will feel like they are standing inside of candy shell, and they will also experience the artist’s consciousness and unconsciousness.

The What If series from 2014, an extension to the installation work, “Sweet Liar,” is a plane painting work. Images established in a visible or invisible manner by the artist’s subconscious flow in the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness, and colors are overlapped in the canvas. Through this whole process, the artist expresses (1) all contradiction and disregard of human beings that she had to bear in the social structure; (2) pain caused by relations; (3) internal wound and deep insight about life.

The artist does not lock herself up in the trauma, nor find solutions to the problem in the outside world. Rather, she explores nature of life by looking back her inner side and asks questions. Such development of her mental state is expressed through canvas, and the audience can experience the process that the artist overcomes trauma. In short, the artist is breathing in the boundary between consciousness and unconsciousness in self-performing manners, and realizes internal growth. Based on questions about the fundamental meaning of trauma, and suppressed memory, she sublimatesself-practice process in art.

Untitled

An extension to the installation work Sweet liar (2013), this work has been transforming and developing as medium through the painting series of the same title in 2013–2014, and through performance in 2014. For Untitled (2020), the internal space where the performer was located for the Untitled (2014) performance, is extended. As a result, the audience can have a feeling that they become performer in a conscious and unconscious manner.

What If

What If (2014–) series express communication mistakes through contingency and instantaneity that take place via colors when the installation work Sweet Liar (2013) transforms to the flat space.
